Blue Beetle

“Blue Beetle” is a 2023 Superhero movie and the newest member of the DCU. It stars Xolo Mariduena (Cobra Kai), Bruna Marquezine (Women in Love), George Lopez (George Lopez), Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2), Susan Sarandon (Mr. Woodcock), Raoul Max Trujillo (Apocalypto), and Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows).

Jaime Reyes (Mariduena) is a recent college graduate with a prelaw degree. He goes back home to Mexico and finds out his family is struggling financially. Jaime sets out to get any sort of work he can to help them out, when he unknowingly helps hide a top-secret government weapon for a girl he finds attractive. The weapon is a symbiotic host that chooses Jaime and gives him an armored suit and incredible powers. This allows Jaime to become the superhero known as the Blue Beetle.

I haven’t heard of the Blue Beetle before, and most DC movies outside of the Batman movies are absolute garbage. Two reasons I gave this a shot though, 1. James Gunn is now in charge of the DCU, and 2. Xolo Mariduena. James Gunn is a terrific director and has proven he can direct superhero movies (Guardians of the Galaxy series). Xolo Mariduena is a great actor in “Cobra Kai” and can already fight because of the show. So, lets jump into the movie. If you’re unfamiliar with the Blue Beetle like I was, think of a cross of Venom and Iron man, and that pretty much sums it up.

So, how is it? The acting is solid all the way through. It’s also great to see George Lopez back in a big role. He does a great job as the comedic relief playing Jaime’s uncle. Xolo Mariduena also does a great job as the lead star, which I figured he would. If you’re a fan of “What We Do in the Shadows” it’s also cool to Harvey Guillen in it. It’s a little over two hours and the firs hour does have some slow moments in it, but that’s just trying to set up the back story and plot. Once the action takes off in the second half, it’s nonstop and does what James Gunn knows how to do. Mix the perfect blend of action and comedy that we all have come to love. For a DC movie, it is very solid, and the future of DC is in good hands with James Gunn. I give it an 8/10. Which outside the Batman films, is one of the higher rated DC movies I have seen.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3″is 2023’s newest and according to director James Gunn, the final installment of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” series. It brings back all our favorite guardians while also adding Will Poulter (We’re the Millers), Chukwudi Iwuji (Peacemaker), and Nico Santos (Superstore) in this installment.

A mad genius known as the High Evolutionary is determined to get his most successful creation back in order to kill it and study its brain. The creation happens to be Rocket. The guardians are determined to protect Rocket at all costs and put a stop to the High Evolutionary.

The Guardians are my favorite series in the MCU. It blends the perfect amount of action and humor together. It is the creme de la creme of the MCU. So how does this one stack up compared to the first two? Simple answer, James Gunn brings another masterpiece. This one is full of action and the comedy we’re used to with the Guardians. It does bring a little more in your feels/drama in this one, but that’s to be expected being supposedly the last one. A lot of it is centered around Rocket and his back story and how he came to be. So that’s pretty cool to see. They do wrap it up as it could end, but they do tease at the end that Star lord will be back. If it’s a solo movie or coming back for another guardians we’ll see. If it is the last one, it has been a hell of a ride. I give it a 9.5/10.

The Suicide Squad (2021)

‘The Suicide Squad’ is the second, or even the remake of the 2016 version ‘Suicide Squad’. This one is James Gunn’s version, it stars Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad), Idris Elba (Luther), John Cena (Blockers), Joel Kinnaman (Suicide Squad), Viola Davis (Suicide Squad), Daniela Melchior (Parque Mayer), David Dastmalchian (Prisoners), Sylvester Stallone (Rocky), and Pete Davidson (The King of Staten Island).

Just like the first Suicide Squad, a group of rag tag villains are brought together in order to save the world.

Two Reasons I wanted to see this movie, 1. James Gunn. James Gunn directed both Guardian of the Galaxy films, which both are amazing. 2. John Cena, John Cena is hilarious in everything he is in, Blocker’s is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen. So with these two involved it was a must see for me. This one is a mix between ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Deadpool’, you have your rag team and comedic relief, mixed with gore and cursing. Not sure what I was expecting but not really this, I didn’t expect all the gore and swearing. Honestly it worked though, it was a perfect blend of action and comedy. Sylvester Stallone’s character and John Cena were hilarious. Forget the first film, that one is garbage, this is the true Suicide Squad. Like I said it’s hilarious, the characters mesh perfectly together, it’s full of action, it’s a great superhero movie. It hasn’t done well in theaters, and there’s talks that Margot Robbie is to blame, that they are looking to move on from her. Which is stupid because, Margot Robbie is awesome as Harley Quinn, she brings the character to life. Leave Margot alone, she’s not the issue. It’s probably the release to HBO Maxx, and the first one being garbage, why ticket sales have sucked. I do find it funny though, the DCU had to bring in a MCU director to put out a good movie, but hey whatever works. James Gunn and ‘The Suicide Squad’ lived up to their potential, I give it a 9/10.
