You People

“You People” is a Netflix original 2023 comedy/drama starring Eddie Murphy (Meet Dave), Jonah Hill (Superbad), Lauren London (ATL), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld), David Duchovny (The X-Files) Mike Epps (Friday After Next), and Rhea Perlman (Cheers).

A young white Jewish man and young African American Muslim woman fall in love and get engaged. Being different skin colors and from different worlds may prove to be too big of a hurdle to overcome with tension from their families mounting.

Eddie Murphy is the GOAT of comedy to me, and I also like Jonah Hill. They bring in the star power also adding Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Mike Epps. So, it looks like a no brainer, that it’s a must see. It’s currently sitting at number one in movies on Netflix. So, how is it? They missed the mark somewhere. It’s two hours of focusing on race. Which is an important issue, but they tried to also make a comedy out of it and ended up falling flat. Either make it a drama, or a comedy with the star power you have. Instead, its a two hour bore, with a couple of good jokes here and there. Overall though, you just want it to end. It’s a shame because I really wanted to like this one, but I give it a 5/10.

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot

‘Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot’ is a 2018 biography/comedy starring Joaquin Phoenix (Joker), Jonah Hill (Superbad), Jack Black (Nacho Libre), and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). This Biopic follows the true story of John Callahan (Phoenix) who struggles with alcoholism, he is involved in a drunk driving accident that leaves him paralyzed from the chest down and leaves him wheelchair bound. He joins AA and starts drawing cartoons and becomes an award winning cartoonist with a new outlook on life.

This has a great cast with Phoenix, Hill, and Black, but I was expecting a little more out of it. Phoenix plays an amazing role, as usual, but it’s a slow movie. It’s inspiring what Callahan overcomes and what he manages to become. Not a bad watch, good story just on the slow side. If you want to check it out, it’s currently on Amazon Prime, I give it a 6/10.

Hail, Caesar!

‘Hail, Caesar!’ is a 2016 mystery/comedy currently streaming on Netflix, which is more mystery than comedy. It features a block buster cast, seriously a lot of heavy hitters in this one, including Josh Brolin (Deadpool 2, Avengers: Endgame), George Clooney, Tilda Swinton (Avengers: Endgame, Doctor Strange), Ralph Fiennes (Kubo and the Two Strings, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Jonah Hill (War Dogs, 21 Jump Street), Channing Tatum (Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street), Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), and Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story). Plus a few others, it’s hard to think of another movie with this many top actors and actresses.

‘Hail, Caesar!’ is a period piece set in the golden age of Hollywood. It follows a studio fixer going through his daily struggles of righting what’s wrong in the Hollywood studio. I love period films centered around the golden age of Hollywood, I always find it as an interesting time in Hollywood and history in general. There are several mini plots in this movie and one main one with George Clooney being kidnapped on set and held for ransom. With as much fire power as this movie has it’s just an okay film. It’s interesting but that’s about it, it jumps around trying to fill in all the stars without really focusing on one direction. It reminds me of AHS when you see the star for the first time in a season and get really excited. It’s another movie with too many heavy hitters that just becomes okay at best. I give it a 6/10
