You People

“You People” is a Netflix original 2023 comedy/drama starring Eddie Murphy (Meet Dave), Jonah Hill (Superbad), Lauren London (ATL), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld), David Duchovny (The X-Files) Mike Epps (Friday After Next), and Rhea Perlman (Cheers).

A young white Jewish man and young African American Muslim woman fall in love and get engaged. Being different skin colors and from different worlds may prove to be too big of a hurdle to overcome with tension from their families mounting.

Eddie Murphy is the GOAT of comedy to me, and I also like Jonah Hill. They bring in the star power also adding Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Mike Epps. So, it looks like a no brainer, that it’s a must see. It’s currently sitting at number one in movies on Netflix. So, how is it? They missed the mark somewhere. It’s two hours of focusing on race. Which is an important issue, but they tried to also make a comedy out of it and ended up falling flat. Either make it a drama, or a comedy with the star power you have. Instead, its a two hour bore, with a couple of good jokes here and there. Overall though, you just want it to end. It’s a shame because I really wanted to like this one, but I give it a 5/10.

Term Life

I recently read an article saying that ‘Term Life’ is one of the best streaming movies on Netflix, that you probably haven’t seen. I haven’t seen it or even heard of it, but it has a solid cast, so I figured I would give it a shot. It’s a 2016 crime/action movie starring Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Bill Paxton (Twister), Johnathan Banks (Breaking Bad), Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II), Terrence Howard (Empire), Mike Epps (Friday After Next), and John Favreau (Iron Man). Like I said a stacked cast, right? The story is actually really good as well, a professional who plans heists (Vaughn) gets mixed up with a dirty cop (Paxton) when a heist goes wrong. The dirty cop must now tie up loose ends by killing Vaughn and going after Vaughn’s estranged daughter (Steinfeld).

Sounds good, right? Well, summed up it’s terrible. I’m not sure who’s writing these articles on the “best” streaming movies you haven’t seen but their taste is terrible. There’s a lot to unpack here, mostly it’s cheesy, very cheesy. The acting seems forced, it’s like a bad made for TV movie, not a movie staring all these good actors. Vince Vaughn and Hailee Steinfeld play father and daughter, but the chemistry between them is flat. Also what is up with Mike Epps trying to play serious roles? He’s not good at it, he’s a funny dude, he should stick with what he does best. Every time he tries to play a tough guy, serious role it’s just always bad. My suggestion is to avoid this one, I give it a 4/10.

Troop Zero

‘Troop Zero’ is a 2020 Amazon exclusive family comedy. It takes place in rural Georgia in 1977, following the story of misfit little girl who dreams of space. She finds out a golden record is being put together of voice recordings that will be transmitted into space. The winning Birdie Scouts troop of the jamboree will be recorded on the golden record. She must now put together a rag tag group of other misfits in order to be able to compete at the jamboree.

‘Troop Zero’ stars Viola Davis (Widows, The Help), McKenna Grace (Gifted), Jim Gaffigan (The Jim Gaffigan Show), Mike Epps ( Next Friday, Friday after Next), and Allison Janney (I, Tonya).

With the rag tag team bonding, and realizing their differences make them special, makes ‘Troop Zero’ a feel good movie for the whole family. It reminds me of other movies such as ‘Little Giants’, or ‘The Little Rascals’. Who doesn’t love a good underdog story with a loveable cast of misfits? I give it a 6.5/10.
