The Bob’s Burgers Movie

“The Bob’s Burgers Movie” is a 2022 animation comedy movie from the show “Bob’s Burgers”. It brings in its main cast including H. Jon Benjamin, Kristen Schaal, Dan Mintz, John Roberts, Eugene Mirman, Kevin Kline, Zach Galifianakis, and Larry Murphy while also giving David Wain a new character.

This is the biggest Belcher’s adventure yet. It’s summertime the kids are out of school and looking forward to a great summer. When a sink hole opens up in front of the restaurant it may end up closing the restaurant for good. Even worse skeletal remains are found in the sink hole and their landlord is arrested for the crime. The Belcher kids are determined to prove his innocence and save the family restaurant.

If you’re fan of the show, you’ll love the movie, simple as that. It’s pretty much just an extended episode of Bob’s Burgers with a few musical numbers thrown in. It’s funny, entertaining and just an overall fun watch. I give it an 8/10.

Battle Royale (2000)

“Battle Royale” is a 2000 Japanese horror starring Tatsuya Fujiwara (Death Note), Aki Maeda (The Cat Returns), Taro Yamamoto (Moon Child), and Takeshi Kitano (The Blindswordsman: Zatoichi).

In the future the Japanese government holds a three-day tournament where a school class fights to the death, only one must be left at the end of the three days or all survivors will be killed. This year the government captures a 9th grade class of 42 students to compete.

This one is pretty highly rated on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic. I also read a list saying this is the best battle royal style movie, think “Hunger games”, “The Condemned”, etc… Cool thing also, this is the first movie to do this, “Hunger Games” came much later, and people even claim, “Hunger Games” is a blatant plagiarism of “Battle Royale.” So, I definitely wanted to watch this one. I’m probably in the minority on this one, but I thought it was just okay. I like the plot and it adds uniqueness like each participant gets a different weapon. Some are good, like a machine gun and bow while others are bad like a pot lid or binoculars. Funny thing though, the pot lid did come in handy. Also, I’m not a fan of dub and subbed movies they never match up, and the dubbing never seems to match the acting, which isn’t the movies’ fault, but still bugs me. The production quality also looks like it’s from the 80’s not 2000. It’s a long one too, a little over two hours, which with 42 kids fighting for their lives it does take a lot of time to show each death. Which I give them credit, there is a lot of unique deaths, it just becomes hard to keep track with the individual stories, friendships, and love interests that come into play. Overall, it’s cool this kicked off the whole battle royal sub-genre, but I give it a 5.5/10. If you do want to check it out, it’s free on Amazon Prime.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

This is the newest MCU movie and is the second standalone Doctor Strange movie, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Vision), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club), and Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers).

A girl who has the ability to travel through the multiverse winds up in Doctor Strange’s universe. She is on the run from someone trying to hunt her down and steal her powers, Doctor Strange must now put his life on the line to protect the girl. The enemy is closer than what he realizes.

This one picks up right after “Spider-Man: No Way Home” where he just gone done dabbling in the multiverse. No way home opened up a lot of doors by dabbling in the multiverse, and Doctor Strange takes the ball and runs with it here. One thing I love about the MCU movies is how they’re all connected and post endgame/infinity war, it always reference’s it and Thanos, I always get a kick out of it. I knew Wanda aka The Scarlet Witch was in it, it also teased to be star packed, including to be rumored were Blade, Ghost Hunter, Deadpool, Wolverine and others. Which we don’t get any of these. We do get a brief cameo from Professor Xavier, and John Krasinski as Mister Fantastic, so that was a cool little easter egg but that’s all we got. There’s no shortage of action, it’s just Wanda going at it against Doctor Strange and Wong. So it’s different than what I was thinking. It’s still a solid movie though. I give it a 7/10.

The Outfit

“The Outfit” is a 2022 crime drama/thriller starring Zoey Deutch (Why Him?), Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf), Mark Rylance (The BFG), and Johnny Flynn (Emma.).

An expert cutter gets dragged into a dangerous situation when a mobster stumbles into his shop after being a shot. He must now tread carefully and try to outsmart the mob in order to survive the night before things spiral out of control.

This is a great period film, it takes place in 1956 in Chicago, in a cutter’s shop. Which before this film I would have called him a tailor, but he makes it very clear anyone can be a tailor, a tailor only sews buttons. He’s a cutter. The whole hour and 45-minute movie takes place in one spot, the cutter’s shop. So not a whole lot of action, so the movie has to rely on one thing, it’s writing. If it doesn’t have strong writing it would be unbearable, because it only takes place in one spot, it’s almost all dialogue. This one is brilliantly written. It keeps you guessing the entire time with twists and turns, and after the 20 minute mark it will have you hanging on the edge of your seat. It has a real “The Usual Suspects” feel to it where the answer is in front of you the whole time but you don’t realize it. For the writing alone I give it a solid 9/10. If you didn’t catch it in theaters, it’s streaming exclusively right now on Peacock.

Morbius

“Morbius” is a 2022 Superhero movie, it’s Marvel’s newest movie, and it follows “Venoms” footsteps as the next anti-hero movie. It stars Jared Leto (Suicide Squad), Matt Smith (Last Night in Soho), Adria Arjona (Emerald City), Tyrese Gibson (Baby Boy), and Al Madrigal (The Way Back).

Dr. Michael Morbius is one of the world’s leading doctors and scientists, he has won a Noble Peace Prize for saving countless lives with his invention of synthetic blood. However, his lifelong goal is to cure his rare blood disease, and his pursuits are funded by his lifelong friend who also suffers from the same rare disease. He finally discovers a cure, but at what cost?

If you look at my other Marvel movie reviews, I talk about how there isn’t a bad Marvel movie, and I think that still holds true with “Morbius”, so the real question is how does it stack up against other Marvel Movies? Marvel is the cream of the crop when it comes to superhero movies. Well, It’s the bottom of the barrel with “Morbius” when it comes to Marvel Movies, which doesn’t mean it’s bad. It has some pacing issues, it’s a lot slower than other Marvel films. It has some scenes here and there where it picks up pace but then it slows down again. Jared Leto who plays the lead role isn’t even the best actor in this, Matt Smith is the saving grace of the film. He plays the “bad” vampire, and honestly, he looks cooler and play a better vampire than Leto. Leto’s character is just flat. There are a few plot holes that bug me too, like after Leto secretly cures himself, and he’s no longer frail and on crutches, he can now walk and he’s buff, but no one questions it. Also, when he’s highly wanted but he’s eating in a restaurant midday in no disguise. Overall, it’s a good movie and worth watching, but stacked up to its fellow Marvel movies it’s towards the bottom. I give it a 7/10.

The Rental

“The Rental” is a 2020 horror/thriller movie starring Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast), Alison Brie (GLOW), Sheila Vand (Argo), and Jeremy Allen White (Shameless). Dave Franco (Unfinished Business) makes his directorial debut with this one.

Two Couples rent a house on the beach for a relaxing weekend away, but things quickly go downhill.

Almost every rental movie is the same, some people rent a house then there’s someone creepy watching them and/or killing them. It’s been told a thousand times, but the ones that are good are really good while the others fall flat. This one falls in the flat department. It’s not the acting, it has a solid cast and it’s good acting. The story doesn’t flow well and is a little jumbled. It’s an hour and a half movie, but it takes an hour before anything happens, then the last thirty minutes they try to jam all the action in. By this point it’s too late, also the ending doesn’t add anything up or answer any questions. With the actors and the story, it has the potential to be good, if it was done differently. I would skip this one altogether, but if you do want to check it out, it just released on Netflix. I give it a 4/10.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is the 2022 sequel to the 2020 movie “Sonic the Hedgehog.” It brings back Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), James Marsden (X-Men), Jim Carrey (The Mask), Tika Sumpter (Ride Along), and Natasha Rothwell (Archer) while adding Idris Elba (Luther), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Danny Phantom), and Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds).

Sonic 2 picks up where the first one left off. Dr. Robotnik is on the mushroom planet trying to find a way back to earth. He manages to open up a portal allowing Knuckles to come through, Dr. Robotnik develops an idea to get back to earth and have Knuckles help him take care of Sonic once and for all. Meanwhile, Tails comes to earth to warn Sonic and help him stop Dr. Robotnik.

If you go back and look at my review on the first one (https://kingsblog.movie.blog/2020/05/09/sonic-the-hedgehog/) you’ll see, I was surprised at how good it was, so I was looking forward to the second one. This one actually surpasses the first. It’s a two-hour movie, but it doesn’t feel like it. They do a great job of finding the perfect blend of comedy and action that the whole family will love. The addition of Idris Elba as Knuckles is great, he reminds me of Drax from “Guardians of the Galaxy”, also Natasha Rothwell plays a very funny role in this one. They tease a third one in the post credits scene, so keep an eye out for it. You can watch the second one as a stand-alone film, but I suggest seeing the first if you haven’t. There are also several nods to the video game throughout the movie. They knocked this one out of the park, I give it a 10/10. It’s just a great lighthearted watch.

OldBoy (2013)

Oldboy is a 2013 remake of a 2003 movie with the same name, I haven’t seen the original but from my understanding this one changed a few things. Spike Lee directs this thriller/mystery and brings a huge cast starring Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), and Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody).

A man is kidnapped and confined to a single room for twenty years. When he is finally freed after twenty years, he is hellbent on finding his captors and making them pay.

I haven’t heard of OldBoy or didn’t know the star-studded cast that was in it. I just keep seeing it on my suggested movies, and it eventually wore me down, so I gave it a shot. It’s a very weird concept, and it’s dark and twisted on so many levels. The twist is going to have you picking your jaw off the floor, now if that’s a good or bad thing, that’s for you to decide. Josh Brolin is the main guy in this, he’s a fantastic actor, he has a wide range. His most famous role is Thanos, but for this, I think it was an odd choice. He just didn’t sell it for me. Overall, it’s not a movie for the faint of heart, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. For shock value alone I think it’s worth the watch, it’s not one you’ll forget. I give it a 7/10. It’s definitely an interesting movie, you can catch it on Netflix.

The Lost City

“The Lost City” is a 2022 RomCom/Adventure movie with a blockbuster cast starring Sandra Bullock (Bird Box), Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street), Daniel Radcliffe (Horns), Brad Pitt (Burn After Reading), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Office Christmas Party), and Oscar Nunez (The Office).

A Romantic Adventure writer (Bullock) is captured by a billionaire (Radcliffe) who thinks she holds the secret to finding a treasure in the Lost City of D. Her cover model (Tatum) comes up with a plan to save her and prove to her that he’s more than just a pretty face.

I love the casting in this one, I’m a huge fan of Radcliffe, Tatum, and Pitt. All are hilarious and great actors. So, I had high hopes for this one, it looks hilarious in the trailer. Unfortunately, this one is a disappointment. It’s one of those movies where the majority of the funny parts are shown in the trailer, sure there’s a few funny spots here and there, but overall, it’s not that funny. I found myself bored a few times. It’s not due to the acting, everyone is solid, it just falls a little flat. Overall, I give it a 6/10.

Hold the Dark

“Hold the Dark” is a 2018 Netflix thriller/drama starring Jeffery Wright (The Batman), Alexander Skarsgard (The Legend of Tarzan), James Badge Dale (The Departed), Riley Keough (The Lodge), and Julian Black Antelope (Debris).

An expert on wolves receives a letter from a woman in Alaska seeking his help tracking a wolf which is taking and killing local kids. Her son seems to be its latest victim. However, he soon discovers something much darker is going on.

This one was a lot different than what I was expecting, I was thinking it was going to be a man hunting a wolf in a rural Alaskan town. Instead, you have a husband hunting down his wife, and killing anyone in his way, and unfortunately the expert is caught right in the middle. I get the symbolism between wolves and humans and sometimes we’re worse than animals. Still wasn’t expecting it, it gets pretty crazy. It’s a great watch, Alexander Skarsgard plays a great crazy role. The problem with this movie is the ending, the ending sucks. It doesn’t wrap anything up, it’s just a dumb ending, again I get the symbolism behind it, but that doesn’t make it good. Overall, it’s still worth watching, I give it a 6.5/10.
